Buzzes, Tweets, Celebrities, Hugs or Starfleet

Jan Chilton on Myspace

As someone who has an active profile on just about every social media site on the internet, I’ve found myself enjoying some of them, and completely turned off by others. They all seem to have their own type of personalities, and most seem to serve a specific purpose for a specific type of interest.

Myspace.com is predominantly musicians and celebrities, although becoming full of self-proclaimed entrepreneurs pushing MLM schemes or the mysterious “Secret”. Facebook seems to be more of a home for internet newbies that enjoy sending each other “smiles”, “hugs”, and farm animals. Techies and narcissists seem to be attracted to Twitter, perhaps the most well-known social media site.

Now Google has brought on a wordier version of Twitter, to entice talky fans who feel restricted with the 140 character limit. Known as “Buzz”, Google hopes it will catch on with the ones who enjoy posting their activities from hour to hour in more detail. Although I have not seen any purpose in Twitter and almost never go there, it has become an international phenomenon that seems to have the most fans of them all.

How can a newcomer decide which social site suits them the best? Here are some quick glances at the 3 oldest and biggest – MySpace, Facebook, Twitter; and two brand new and very different ones- Google’s Buzz, and (huh?) William Shatner’s www.MyOuterSpace.com.
